She learned that she will get attention and thereby love if she is good at something. That could be a reason she strives for attention and is very self-centered. She never learned what human relationships are apart from being recognized and praised. And as Mahiru seems to have been a smart kid from the start, she quickly gained a lot of recognition.
Therefore the attention and “love” she got from early on was bound to recognition when she passed a test or experiment well. She most likely only had relationships with the scientists that took care of her. So if I would describe Mahiru’s personality I would base it in where she is coming from and what she is doing along the way. Finding the right adjectives is really difficult for me. And in general I characterize characters by their actions. I do most of it by instinct or just based on people I know.
Even though I’m a writer, I have no clue what type of characteristics there are. I think I’m really bad at describing characters and their traits. This has been chilling in my drafts for way to long.
